WHO
WE ARE

Stop the Grind is an international initiative bringing together organizations and individuals with one shared goal: ending the Grind in the Faroe Islands.

A Coalition for Change.

Stop the Grind is a partnership between Sea Shepherd and Shared Planet, an impact-focused consultancy, working with a growing international network of organizations, policymakers, researchers, legal experts, campaigners and other specialists.

Based in London and working internationally, the initiative was created to build the broad coalition needed to challenge the Grind from multiple directions. By bringing together different areas of expertise, networks and influence, we can strengthen efforts to end the hunts and ensure the issue remains on the international agenda.

From Direct Action to International Advocacy

Sea Shepherd has campaigned against the Grind for more than four decades, beginning with its first campaign in the Faroe Islands in 1983. Over the years, crews returned repeatedly to document the hunts, intervene to protect whales and other dolphins, and bring international attention to what was happening in the Faroese fjords.

As restrictions on campaigning in the Faroe Islands increased, the approach evolved. Sea Shepherd continued documenting and exposing the hunts while also pursuing political and legal avenues for change, including engagement with European institutions.

The killing of 1,428 Atlantic white-sided dolphins in a single hunt in September 2021 became a major turning point. The scale of the slaughter generated international outrage and renewed debate within the Faroe Islands itself, demonstrating the potential for a much broader movement for change.

Stop the Grind grew from that moment: a campaign designed to bring organizations and individuals together around a shared strategy for ending the hunts.

The Partners Behind Stop the Grind

SEA SHEPHERD

Sea Shepherd has actively opposed the Grind since 1983, through direct-action campaigns, documenting the hunts in the Faroe Islands, and international advocacy. Today, Sea Shepherd Global, based in the Netherlands, and Sea Shepherd Conservation Society, based in the United States, work together as partners in Stop the Grind.

Sea Shepherd continues to document the hunts and expose their reality to the world, while working internationally to build political and public pressure to bring them to an end.

SHARED PLANET

Shared Planet is a global research and stakeholder engagement consultancy focused on delivering insights, analysis and engagement on social issues and environmental justice. Its work includes research and insights, stakeholder engagement, strategic advisory, and policy and advocacy.

As a partner in Stop the Grind, Shared Planet works alongside Sea Shepherd to bring together organizations and individuals with the shared goal of ending the Grind.

Working Together to End the Grind

Stop the Grind is built on the belief that ending the hunts will require expertise, influence and sustained pressure from many different directions. By connecting people and organizations that can contribute to that effort, we are building an international coalition capable of turning opposition to the Grind into meaningful action.
